IRANZ believes “to be the best, you have to learn from the best.”
High Performance player & coach participants were treated to that very opportunity when All Black Assistant Coaches Ian Foster & Mike Cron joined them during the final section of their programme last week.
An Assistant Coach of the All Blacks since 2012, “Fozzie” began coaching immediately after his playing career – which included close to 150 appearances for Waikato, and 28 Super Rugby appearances for the Chiefs.
He’s now been Assistant Coach of the All Blacks since 2012, a period of which the side has enjoyed significant success, including the victorious 2015 Rugby World Cup campaign.
During his visit to IRANZ, Foster led players & coaches through extensive theoretical and practical modules on counter attack, turnover and team attack.
Only a few days later, another All Black Coach joined the programme. This time, by All Black forwards coach Mike Cron.
Widely regarded as the greatest scrum coach in the world, the man dubbed the “Scrum Doctor” boasts a professional coaching career that’s spanned more than 35 years and in 15 different countries.
Cron spent two days on the programme working with both players & coaches.
Mike Cron led modules not only around the scrum, but also lineouts, restarts, continuity and the professional rugby environment.
For Cron, this was his fourth consecutive year to feature on the IRANZ High Performance programme.
Combined with the other Staff Coaches on the programme, which included former Irish and English Head Coach Brian Ashton, and Position-Specific Coaches such as Piri Weepu, Jeff Wilson, Filo Tiatia and Corey Flynn – the knowledge passed on to player & coach participants on this programme was nothing short of World-Class.
