As a former rugby player himself, John Eggleton had a sound knowledge of the game before he started coaching. However as his kids grew older and he began coaching competitive secondary school teams, John learned how the performance of a rugby team can truly be influenced by the knowledge and ability of their coach.
John made the conscious decision to upskill himself through IRANZ, and was rewarded for his effort.
Having attended various Wellington Rugby Football Union courses, John was skilled in the fundamental skills required for coaching – enthusiasm, good communication skills, patience etc. However he felt his coaching could benefit from a deeper knowledge of the technical and tactical areas of the game.
John enquired about our courses, and enrolled in the Advanced Coaches Course; a 7-day, full-immersion course at the Sport & Rugby Institute in Palmerston North.
Learning directly from past and present rugby professionals, John learned how to get the most from his team by profiling his players, and basing a game plan around the strengths of the team. He also learned the true meaning of preparation, and working hard on time management, organisation and team-planning – even before preseason had begun.
The following season, John applied the many new tools and techniques he learned on the course. St. Pat’s Silverstream 2nd XV won the Premier 2 College division, beating Tawa 1st XV 22-14 in the final.
Congratulations John and the 2nd XV at St. Pat’s Silverstream.
