IRANZ Insight: 2019 All Black Hooker Selection

Three Hookers will be selected in the All Black Squad for the Rugby World Cup Squad this year.

Two of the hookers absolutely pick themselves – Codie Taylor and Dane Coles.

They’re both outstanding in their core role of lineout accuracy and scrummaging.

Codie Taylor and TJ Perenara (middle) attended the Advanced Players Course in 2008. Seven years later in 2015, they played together once again – this time, for the All Blacks in the Rugby World Cup

These days the hooker is expected to bring a dynamic factor to the game and link with the backs in general play, particularly following possession from the lineout.

Saturday’s Highlanders v Blues match confirmed for me that the third hooker will be Liam Coltman.

He was a standout – performed his core role perfectly, and scored a try.

Better yet, he just recently re-signed to remain in NZ.

Next week will be more contentious – the prop position where everyone has an opinion!
